"I was a child of the '80s. I grew up loving those classic Spielbergian coming-of-age tales. And that was something I wanted to bring to Bumblebee," says former Laika stop-motion studio president/animator Travis Knight, who directs his first live-action film with the forthcoming "Transformers" spinoff, though he made his directorial debut with the Laika animated film "Kubo and the Two Strings."

While additionally offering a quick introduction to the new "Bumblebee" director, Paramount has released a behind-the-scenes featurette, which further expounds Knight's vision of the film. It's a 1987-set standalone movie, which sees the iconic Autobot character Bumblebee transforming back into his classic form of a Volkswagen Beetle. It also stars Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect, The Edge of Seventeen) as a Californian teen who gets swept up in a spectacular adventure after befriending a large, yellow, friendly alien robot that she first discovered in a junkyard disguised as an old beaten-up VW bug.

WWE superstar-turned-film actor John Cena co-stars in the film as a mysterious government officer, named Agent Burns. He's a member of Sector 7 who is actively hunting down the yellow Autobot. While talking about the director, Cena says in the clip that "Travis is taking the story back to the beginning. It's set in the time period where I first fell in love with Transformers."

Currently slated for a Christmas theatrical release, "Bumblebee," which is the first "Transformers" movie not to be directed by Michael Bay, will possibly be set up as the first installment of a rebooted franchise, reverting the "Transformers" film property back to its '80s roots.

synopsis:
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
