Acclaimed French actor Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Eastern Promises) can be seen integrating into the Tahitian culture as he portrays 19th-century French master artist Paul Gauguin in the biographical drama "Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti," for which a U.S. trailer has been released.

Hailing from French filmmaker Edouard Deluc (Welcome to Argentina), the historical film chronicles Gauguin's experimental French Polynesian period, the years between 1891 and 1893.

After leaving his family back in France, Gauguin, who grew tired of the art scene in his home country, traveled to Tahiti where he met a young Tahitian girl, named Tehura (played here by newcomer Tuhei Adams). She eventually ended up being his muse and bride -- and also the subject of many of his most famous paintings.

"Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti," which spent last year on the festival circuit, is making its way to the States this summer, opening in select U.S. theaters on July 11th. Watch the trailer, above.

synopsis:
French artist Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was an innovator of modern art, known for experimenting with bold color and distorted proportions, along with his contemporaries Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cezanne. By 1891, Gauguin was already well-known in artistic circles, but had grown tired of the civilized world and its political and moral conventions. Leaving his wife and children behind, he ventures alone to Tahiti, consumed with a yearning for new inspiration. Pushing deep into the Tahitian jungle, Gauguin meets Tehura, his muse, who will consume his mind and inspire his most iconic works of art.
