Prepare to enter the Spider-Verse! It's an alternate universe where New York is literally crawling with "Spider-People!"

Check out the new official trailer for "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," the upcoming 3D animated superhero movie, which tells the origin story of Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino teenager who discovers that he possesses superpowers -- and his abilities are very much like Spider-man's.

In this big-screen Sony Pictures Animation adaptation of the Miles Morales comic books, Miles lives in an alternate Brooklyn where Peter Parker (voiced here by TV's "New Girl" star Jake Johnson) is much older and also appears to be lying low, yet has decided to take Miles (voiced by Dope's Shameik Moore) under his wing. The two develop a mentor-student relationship while Miles must learn to balance his life as a superhero with his life as an ordinary high school kid.

The voice cast also includes "Atlanta" actor Brian Tyree Henry as Miles' policeman father, Jefferson Davis, and upcoming "Bumblebee" star Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy who, in this alternate version, also possesses Spider-like powers and goes by the name "Spider-Woman (aka Spider-Gwen)."

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the directors of "The Lego Movie" and the "Jump Street" comedies, are executive producing the animated film, for which Lord also wrote the screenplay. Meanwhile, animators Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians), and screenwriter Rodney Rothman (22 Jump Street) are credited as co-directors.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" is swinging into theaters this Christmas season, opening on December 14th.
