Matthew McConaughey tries to keep the McConaissance alive as he stars as the illegal gun-dealing father of a rising teenage kingpin in the first official trailer for "White Boy Rick."

Directed by French-born British filmmaker Yann Demange, who previously directed the acclaimed Jack O'Connell-starring Irish thriller "71", "White Boy Rick" is a 1980s-set crime film that's based on the incredible true story of Richard Wershe Jr., who at age 14 was recruited into becoming the youngest FBI informant in history, and by at age 17 was the biggest and most powerful cocaine dealer in Detroit, Michigan.

Newcomer Richie Merritt, a Baltimore native who was discovered last year by a casting director, makes his acting and film debut, playing the titular White Boy Rick.

McConaughey co-stars as Rick's two-bit criminal father who, when it comes to parenting, is more like Tony Soprano than, say, Ward Cleaver. Or perhaps, he's more like a mixture of Walter White and Al Bundy.

In addition to McConaughey and Merritt, the film also stars Bel Powley, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bruce Dern, Piper Laurie, Brian Tyree Henry, and RJ Cyler.

"White Boy Rick" is hitting theaters September 21st.
