CBS All Access, the TV network's newly minted subscription streaming video service, is gearing up to release a new original web series next month, which shows lots of promise as well as features a strong cast.

"Strange Angel" is a 1940s-era drama series that's executive produced by Ridley Scott and stars Jack Reynor (Sing Street, Transformers: Age of Extinction) as John Parsons, a real-life rocket propulsion engineer who was known for dabbling in the occult -- particularly within the Los Angeles underground black magic sex scene in the early '40s, which included a secret club of notable scientists and science-fiction writers as well as Hollywood stars.

The cast also includes "Homeland" actor Rupert Friend as Parsons' next-door neighbor who introduces him to the occult, while Bella Heathcote (The Man in the High Castle) co-stars as Parsons' wife.

Acclaimed filmmaker David Lowery (A Ghost Story, Ain't Them Bodies Saints, Pete's Dragon) directs the pilot episode of the eight-episode streaming series, which is based on George Pendle's biographical book "Strange Angel: The Otherworldly Life of Rocket Scientist John Whiteside Parsons."

Created and written by screenwriter Mark Heyman (Black Swan, The Skeleton Twins), "Strange Angel" is premiering Thursday June 14th, streaming exclusively on CBS All Access.
