Former "Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam and the upcoming "Bohemian Rhapsody" star Rami Malek take on the roles originally played by Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, respectively, in the upcoming "Papillon" remake, for which a trailer has been released.

Based on the incredible true story of how a safecracker and a counterfeiter agreed to work together to break out of a sadistic French prison camp, the upcoming film, a remake of the classic 1973 prison-escape thriller, is directed by Danish filmmaker Michael Noer (Northwest, R).

Hunnam portrays Henri "Papillon" Charriere, a two-bit thief who is falsely convicted for murder. He is sentenced to life imprisonment and forced to serve ten years of hard labor at a brutal penal colony in French Guiana. Once there, Papillon develops a partnership with a scrawny forger named Louis Dega (played by Malek). The two conspire to escape their hellish conditions in a plot that will take them several attempts and several years to execute.

Co-starring Eve Hewson (upcoming Robin Hood), Tommy Flanagan (FX's Sons of Anarchy), Michael Socha (TV's Once Upon a Time), and Roland Moller (Atomic Blonde), "Papillon" is being released in select theaters on August 24th.

synopsis:
Based on the international best-selling autobiographic books "Papillon" and "Banco", the film follows the epic story of Henri "Papillon" Charriere (Charlie Hunnam), a safecracker from the Parisian underworld who is framed for murder and condemned to life in the notorious penal colony on Devil's Island. Determined to regain his freedom, Papillon forms an unlikely alliance with a convicted counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek), who in exchange for protection, agrees to finance Papillon's escape.
