"Who shot Biggie Smalls?"

Well, it seems Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker are trying to solve that mystery in the newly-released trailer for the upcoming investigative thriller "City of Lies."

Based on the non-fiction book "LAbyrinth" by journalist Randall Sullivan, the film casts Depp as Russell Poole, the real-life LAPD homicide detective who investigated the 1997 murder of celebrated East Coast rapper Notorious B.I.G (aka Biggie Smalls), which became one of the most notorious and unsolved cases in recent history.

Whitaker co-stars as a street reporter who, years following the murders of Biggie and Tupac, teams up with Poole as they uncover evidence that suggests a conspiracy in the LA police department, which seems to show a direct link that connects the Biggie murder to dirty cops secretly associated with Suge Knight and his label, Death Row Records.

Co-starring Neil Brown Jr., Obba Babatunde, Xander Berkeley, and Peter Greene, the film is directed by helmer Brad Furman, whose credits include the acclaimed crime thrillers "The Infiltrator" and "The Lincoln Lawyer."

"City of Lies" is hitting theaters on September 7th.
