Six years after the tragic death of Whitney Houston, Oscar-winning documentarian/filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September, The Last King of Scotland) sets out to celebrate the Grammy-winning singer's life and career with an intimate and revealing portrait. And it's the first ever documentary to be authorized by the Whitney Houston Estate.

After given full access to Houston's archive of rarely-seen footage, personal home movies, family photos, and audio recordings, director Macdonald has assembled what appears to be a raw and honest look at the superstar's triumphs and struggles, from her humble beginnings to her meteoric rise in the entertainment industry.

The documentary, called "Whitney," promises to have "the questions you want asked" and "the answers you never knew," as it also digs into Houston's turbulent marriage to pop-singer Bobby Brown, as well as delves into Brown and Houston's history of drug abuse.

Featuring new and exclusive interviews with some of Houston's closest family members and also her closest associates in the music business, "Whitney" will be released in theaters on July 6th. Watch the newly-released full-length trailer, above.

synopsis:
Whitney Houston broke more music industry records than any other female singer in history. With over 200 million album sales worldwide, she was the only artist to chart seven consecutive U.S. No. 1 singles. She also starred in several blockbuster movies before her brilliant career gave way to erratic behavior, scandals and death at age 48. The documentary feature Whitney is an intimate, unflinching portrait of Houston and her family that probes beyond familiar tabloid headlines and sheds new light on the spellbinding trajectory of Houston's life. Using never-before-seen archival footage, exclusive demo recordings, rare performances, audio archives and original interviews with the people who knew her best, Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald unravels the mystery behind "The Voice," who thrilled millions even as she struggled to make peace with her own troubled past.
