FOX has released the first official trailer for "The Passage," a new, upcoming fall drama that's being executive produced by legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott (The Martian, Gladiator) and also executive produced by writer-director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, War for the Planet of the Apes).

Written and developed by TV writer/producer Liz Heldens (Friday Night Lights, The Orville), the thriller series is based on the best-selling vampire-tinged trilogy of the same name by author Justin Cronin. The show is set in a world where a rapidly spreading virus has been turning infected people into vampire-like beings.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Pitch, NYPD Blue) stars as a federal agent trying to apprehend a 10-year-old orphan girl (played by Saniyya Sidney, of "Fences" and "Hidden Figures") who has been specifically selected by the government to serve as a guinea pig for an experimental and highly dangerous drug test. And though she could be crucial to finding a cure for the devastating disease, Gosselaar's character, nevertheless, takes it upon himself to disobey orders and instead go on the run with the little girl at his side, under his protective watch.

The cast also includes Caroline Chikezie (The Shannara Chronicles), Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire), Henry Ian Cusick (Lost), Alain Uy (True Detective), Genesis Rodriguez (Time After Time), Jamie McShane (Bloodline), Brianne Howey (The Exorcist), and Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage).

"The Passage" will be released later in the fall as a part of FOX's new fall show line-up. To watch more previews for FOX fall shows, click here.

synopsis:
Based on author Justin Cronin's best-selling trilogy of the same name, THE PASSAGE is an epic, character-driven thriller written by Liz Heldens (Friday Night Lights). Executive-produced by Emmy Award winner and Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Ridley Scott (The Martian, Gladiator) and writer/director Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield), THE PASSAGE focuses on Project Noah, a secret medical facility where scientists are experimenting with a dangerous virus that could lead to the cure for all disease, but also carries the potential to wipe out the human race.

When a young girl, AMY BELLAFONTE (Saniyya Sidney) is chosen to be a test subject, Federal Agent BRAD WOLGAST (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) is the man who is tasked with bringing her to Project Noah. Ultimately, however, Wolgast becomes her surrogate father, as he tries to protect her at any cost. Brad and Amy's journey will force them to confront Project Noah's lead scientist, MAJOR NICHOLE SYKES (Caroline Chikezie), and the hardened ex-CIA operative in charge of operations, CLARK RICHARDS (Vincent Piazza), whom Brad trained. It likewise brings them face-to-face with a dangerous new race of beings confined within the walls of Project Noah, including former scientist TIM FANNING (Jamie McShane) and death-row inmate SHAUNA BABCOCK (Brianne Howey). In seeking out any allies he can find, Brad also turns to his former wife, DR. LILA KYLE (Emmanuelle Chriqui), for help. But as Project Noah's scientists hone in on a cure that could save humanity, these new beings begin to test their own powers, inching one step closer to an escape that could lead to an unimaginable apocalypse.
