History's most notorious robberies are sometimes orchestrated by the unlikeliest of thieves.

Check out a new trailer for "American Animals," a stranger-than-fiction true-crime thriller about one of the most audacious art heists in U.S. history.

The based-on-a-true-story caper film stars Evan Peters (from the X-Men Movies, TV's American Horror Story) and Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) as childhood friends from Lexington, Kentucky who, along with two of their college buddies, devised a detailed, yet bold plan to steal the world's most valuable books (including John James Audubon's 1830s illustration book "Birds of America") from the Transylvania University library.

Also starring Blake Jenner (Everybody Wants Some, TV's Glee), Jared Abrahamson (TV's Travelers) and Emmy-winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid's Tale), the film is written and directed by acclaimed British documentary filmmaker Bart Layton, of "The Imposter" fame.

"American Animals," which is Layton's first narrative film, premiered to strong reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival. It's now scheduled to hit theaters on June 1st.

synopsis:
The extraordinary and thrilling true story of four friends (Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner, and Jared Abrahamson) living an ordinary existence who brazenly attempt to execute one of the most audacious art heists in US history.
