"Big Little Lies" Emmy-winner Laura Dern will be returning to HBO next month with another thought-provoking mystery drama, and the cable company has just released its official trailer.

Unfolding through multiple flashbacks, yet told from the perspective of a protagonist with a foggy memory, "The Tale" casts Dern as a New York documentary filmmaker who, after her mother (played by Oscar-winner Ellen Burstyn) discovers one of her old childhood short stories, is prompted to return home to dig into her past.

While she investigates an emotionally difficult moment in her childhood, Dern's character attempts to reexamine the nurturing relationship she once had with her old horse riding instructor (played by both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's Elizabeth Debicki and Six Feet Under's Frances Conroy during different time frames), while at the same time, also try to find the truth about the possibly an inappropriate relationship she had with the instructor's husband (played by Parenthood's Jason Ritter).

Written and directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Jennifer Fox (who is making her first narrative feature debut) and based on her own life story, "The Tale" co-stars Common as Dern's spouse, and features Isabelle Nelisse (Mama, IT) as the 13-year-old version of Dern's character.

The film, which premiered to strong reviews earlier this year at Sundance, will debut on HBO beginning Saturday, May 26th.

synopsis:
Can our memories mislead us? Does the mind unconsciously reframe the truth to make it palatable? Jennifer Fox (Laura Dern) faces a host of life-altering questions after a short story from her middle school days forces her to re-examine her first sexual relationship and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive.

An unforgettable meditation on elusive nature of memory, The Tale is the first narrative feature from Sundance Grand Prize Winner and Emmy nominated writer-director Jennifer Fox, whose documentary films have earned international acclaim for their groundbreaking artistry and unflinching honesty. Based on Fox's own life story, The Tale sees the filmmaker bravely pushing forward the boundaries of conventional storytelling, creating a dialogue between past and present to illustrate the interplay between memory and trauma.
