Two-time Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain stars as a 19th-century portrait artist who befriends legendary Lakota Sioux Chief Sitting Bull in the upcoming historical drama "Woman Walks Ahead," for which a trailer has been released.

Co-starring Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell as a disgruntled US Army officer, the film casts Canadian actor Michael Greyeyes (The New World, TV's Fear the Walking Dead) as the legendary tribal leader, while Chastain portrays real-life artist Caroline Weldon, who ended up traveling from New York to North Dakota to paint a couple of historical portraits of Sitting Bull.

Depicting the events leading up to the massacre at Wounded Knee, "Woman Walks Ahead" is written by acclaimed British writer Steven Knight (creator of TV's Peaky Blinders and FX's Taboo) and directed by award-winning film and TV helmer Susanna White (Our Kind of Traitor, FX's Trust, HBO's Boardwalk Empire).

The film, which premiered last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, will now be hitting theaters on June 29th.

synopsis:
Based on true events, Woman Walks Ahead tells the story of Catherine Weldon (Jessica Chastain), a widowed artist from New York who, in the 1880s, traveled alone to North Dakota to paint a portrait of Chief Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes). Her arrival at Standing Rock is welcomed with open hostility by a US Army officer (Sam Rockwell), who has stationed troops around the Lakota reservation to undermine Native American claims to the land. As Catherine and Sitting Bull grow closer, and as their friendship -- and his life -- are threatened by imperious government forces, Catherine must contend with the violence that underlies her position.
