This is the story of how an obscure English actor named Leon Vitali became the long-time personal assistant to legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick.

Check out the trailer for "Filmworker," an insightful documentary about Stanley Kubrick's most loyal and devoted follower.

Leon Vitali is a former British actor who was cast in a small role in Kubrick's 1975 period drama "Barry Lyndon," which ultimately led him to work closely with the award-winning director for nearly 30 years as his personal jack-of-all-trades assistant. He performed everything from scouting locations to serving as an acting coach for the young boy in "The Shining," as well as coaching R. Lee Ermey during the filming of "Full Metal Jacket."

Directed by documentary filmmaker Tony Zierra, who is currently developing his second Stanley Kubrick doc, which will chart the notoriously long production of Kubrick's final film "Eyes Wide Shut," "Filmworker" had received glowing reviews from critics at last year's Cannes Film Festival. The documentary is now scheduled to open theatrically in New York on May 11th, with other cities to follow.

synopsis:
Leon Vitali was a rising British television actor when Stanley Kubrick picked him for the role of Lord Bullingdon in Barry Lyndon. That first encounter with the famed auteur proved decisive -- he swiftly resolved to devote the rest of his life working for the director, this time behind the scenes, and took on just about every job available: casting director, acting coach, location scouter, sound engineer, color corrector, A.D., promoter, and eventually restorer of Kubrick's films. Tony Zierra’s affecting documentary profiles the devoted "filmworker" -- Vitali's preferred job title -- as he enthusiastically recounts his days with the notoriously meticulous, volatile and obsessive director. The experiences brought both tremendous sacrifice and glowing pride. Filmworker celebrates the invisible hands that shape masterpieces, reminding us that behind every great director, there is a Leon Vitali. --Telluride Film Festival
