The First Purge — Official Trailer

It was the night that redefined the country. And it's the night that brings out the best and the worst in everybody. Witness how it all began in the new official trailer for "The First Purge," the upcoming prequel and the fourth installment in "The Purge" film series.

Once again written by franchise creator James DeMonaco, the thriller is set in the not-too-distant future (but also takes place before the original "Purge" film) and chronicles how the government rolled out the first ever "Purge" -- an annual 12-hour period during which all crime is legal, including murder.

Marisa Tomei (Spider-Man: Homecoming) co-stars in the film as the misguided politician who created the controversial lawless experiment. The cast also includes Y'Lan Noel (HBO's Insecure), Lex Scott Davis (CBS' Training Day), Joivan Wade (Doctor Who), and Luna Lauren Velez (SHO's Dexter).

Directed by Gerard McMurray, who previously wrote and directed the Netflix fraternity-hazing drama "Burning Sands," "The First Purge" is being released in theaters on July 4th.

Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country's 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge.

To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
