Horror director Eli Roth, of "Hostel" and "Death Wish" remake fame, is doing something very different from what he has done before. He has just made a spooky family-friendly movie, starring Jack Black and Cate Blanchett, and the first trailer is here.

Check out the first peek at "The House with a Clock in Its Walls," Roth's upcoming film adaptation of the 1973 Gothic horror children's book by celebrated young adult novelist John Bellairs, which was drawn by renowned Gothic illustrator Edward Gorey.

The Universal Pictures film, which comes from Steven Spielberg's longtime production company Amblin Entertainment, follows a 10-year-old orphaned boy (played by Owen Vaccaro, of "Daddy's Home") as he is sent to live with his eccentric uncle (Black), who turns out to be a well-meaning small-town warlock who lives in a spooky old manor full of secret passageways, hidden rooms, and magical furnishings.

Meanwhile, Blanchett plays the next-door neighbor, who is secretly a witch. She helps out Black's character when he locates an evil and powerful ticking clock fixed deep within the walls of his house.

Written for the screen by television writer/producer Eric Kripke (the creator of the long-running series "Supernatural"), "The House with a Clock in Its Walls" will be arriving in theaters this fall, beginning on September 21st.

synopsis:
In the tradition of Amblin classics where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places, Jack Black and two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett star in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, from Amblin Entertainment. The magical adventure tells the spine-tingling tale of 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) who goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart.
