In what can be described as the female and East Coast answer to "Straight Outta Compton," check out the newly-released trailer for the hip-hop biopic "Roxanne Roxanne," which is chronicling the life and career of '80s New York rapper "Roxanne Shante" Gooden, who at age 14 became one of the first female MCs in the rap music industry.

Introducing newcomer Chante Adams in her first ever film role as the titular Roxanne, the film also features supporting turns by Nia Long (Friday, Boyz n the Hood) as Roxanne's financially struggling mother and Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Hidden Figures) as Roxanne's much older and abusive boyfriend.

Written and directed by filmmaker Michael Larnell, who made his film debut with the Spike Lee-endorsed black-and-white dramedy "Cronies," the new hip-hop drama premiered to mostly strong reviews at Sundance this year.

Counting Forest Whitaker and Pharrell Williams among its producers, "Roxanne Roxanne" will be released on Netflix beginning on March 23rd.
