A brand-new international trailer has been released for "Mary Magdalene," the upcoming biblical biopic starring two-time Oscar nominee Rooney Mara as the titular follower of Jesus Christ, who is being portrayed here by three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix.

The film, which reunites Mara with her "Lion" director Garth Davis, offers a uniquely different take on the events that led up to the crucifixion as it's told from Mary's perspective, specifically revolving around her relationship with Jesus.

Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange, 12 Years a Slave) is cast as Peter the Apostle, while French-Algerian actor Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) plays Judas. Other supporting cast members include Ryan Corr (Hacksaw Ridge), Ariane Labed (The Lobster), Uri Gavriel (The Band's Visit), and Lubna Azabal (Incendies).

From the producers of "The King's Speech" and written by Helen Edmundson (TV's The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher) and Philippa Goslett (How to Talk to Girls at Parties), "Mary Magdalene" is set to open internationally on March 16th. The Weinstein Company currently holds the film's U.S. distribution rights. But due to the recent Weinstein scandal, a U.S. release date has yet to be scheduled as the company is currently in limbo.

synopsis:
MARY MAGDALENE is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.
