It's the eye-popping gamble that Netflix took last Sunday.

Check out the new official trailer for "The Cloverfield Paradox," the secret "Cloverfield" movie that Netflix released last Sunday right after the Super Bowl.

The streaming company struck a deal with Paramount for the film's streaming rights, and made the bold decision to not only promote the sci-fi movie during the big game, but also to release it on the night of. A gamble that, for all intents and purposes, pretty much worked as a successful promotional stunt. Even though, the film, itself, is being panned by critics.

Directed by indie filmmaker Julius Onah (The Girl Is in Trouble) and produced by J. J. Abrams, who apparently re-worked the original story to fit it into the "Cloverfield" multi-universe, "Paradox" stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo, Daniel Bruhl, Chris O'Dowd, Aksel Hennie, Zhang Ziyi, John Ortiz, and Elizabeth Debicki as an international group of scientists aboard a space station who are trying desperately to solve the energy crisis on Earth, only to end up opening up a portal to a dark parallel universe during an experiment-gone-wrong mishap.

"The Cloverfield Paradox," which is the third entry in the "Cloverfield" franchise, is available right now on Netflix.

Side note: a fourth "Cloverfield" movie, which is said to be taking place in World War II during the D-Day invasion, is expected to be released in theaters later in the year, sometime in October through Paramount and not Netflix.
