It's not scheduled to hit theaters until October, but today Sony Pictures has unveiled the very first teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated Spider-Man-based action movie "Venom," which is starring Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, Dunkirk) as the titular Marvel comic book supervillain-turned-anti-hero.

Set in the Spider-Man world, although not officially within the Marvel cinematic universe, "Venom" casts Hardy as Eddie Brock, the human host of a sentient alien "symbiote" that endows him with a gooey, fluid-like black suit which comes with enhanced abilities.

The film, which also stars Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) and Riz Ahmed (Rogue One), is said to be primarily based on two comic book mini-series, "Venom: Lethal Protector" and "Planet of the Symbiotes," in which Eddie Brock moves to San Francisco from New York and finds himself squaring off against an army of symbiotes.

Directed by "Zombieland" helmer Ruben Fleischer, "Venom" is currently slated for an October 5th theatrical release.
