HBO has been celebrated for being the home of dragons and White Walkers. But with "Game of Thrones" not returning until next year, it puts the network in an unusual position where they're throwing all their support behind the science fiction-tinged western thriller "Westworld," which is finally returning later this year with its eagerly-awaited second season.

While dropping the official season 2 trailer during the Super Bowl, HBO is betting big on the violent mystery series that's based on Michael Crichton's cult 1973 thriller about a futuristic Western-themed amusement park where android servants suddenly become self aware and start to kill off the human visitors.

The critically-acclaimed J. J. Abrams-produced series, which hails from the husband-and-wife team of Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight, Person of Interest) and Lisa Joy (Burn Notice), adds an air of mystery and intrigue (as well as danger and suspense) to Crichton's original concept, but seemingly further examines the perils and temptations of virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

Starring Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton, and Ed Harris as the sadistic man-in-black gunslinger, "Westworld: Season 2" returns on April 22nd on HBO.

Live without limits in a world where every human appetite can be indulged. From executive producers Lisa Joy, Jonathan Nolan and J.J. Abrams, comes this dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin.
