Rachel Weisz stirs up a lot of strong emotions when she returns home for her father's funeral in the newly-released trailer for the highly-charged drama "Disobedience," which also stars Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman, the film casts Weisz as an ostracized Jewish woman who, because of a prior "transgression," was forced to leave her strict Orthodox Jewish community decades ago. But when her rabbi father suddenly passes away, she is allowed to return home for his funeral, only to discover that her former lesbian girlfriend (McAdams) -- who is actually the reason why she was banished in the first place -- is now married and religiously-bound to her rabbi cousin (Nivola).

"Disobedience" marks the English-language debut of acclaimed Chilean filmmaker Sebastian Lelio, of the recent Oscar-nominated Chilean transgender drama "A Fantastic Woman" and the critically lauded Chilean hit "Gloria."

Co-written by Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz (co-writer of "Ida" and the upcoming "Colette"), "Disobedience" will be hitting U.S. theaters on April 27th.

synopsis:
Based on the book by Naomi Alderman, DISOBEDIENCE follows a woman (Rachel Weisz) as she returns to the community that shunned her decades earlier for an attraction to a childhood friend (Rachel McAdams). Once back, their passions reignite as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality.
