It's the movie that scared the living daylights out of audiences last week at the Sundance Film Festival. It's also what critics are declaring the most terrifying film since "The Exorcist," and arguably the most compelling performance of Toni Collette's career.

Check out the official trailer for "Hereditary," the new psychological horror movie about the unraveling of a grief-stricken family following the death of their reclusive, dementia-addled grandmother. Collette plays the family's new matriarch, a dollhouse maker who struggles to cope with her mother's death, despite the fact that her mother was a very, very strange woman who for many years exerted significant control over her life.

In addition to Collette, the cast also includes Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects), Alex Wolff (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), newcomer Milly Shapiro, and Emmy-winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid's Tale).

Marking the feature film debut of writer-director Ari Aster, "Hereditary" is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on June 8th.

synopsis:
When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter's family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.

Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.
