Annihilation — Featurette: 'The Shimmer'

In the upcoming science-fiction thriller "Annihilation," Natalie Portman stars as a military-trained biologist who leads a scientific mission to explore an uncharted island that has been quarantined by the government. This contained region is submerged by some kind of alien-like force field that has altered the ecosystem, turning everything inside the mysterious bubbling dome into a dangerous mutated wildlife.

The rapidly spreading phenomenon is called "The Shimmer." And a newly-released featurette offers some more details about what Portman and her all-female research team are facing once they travel into the unknown.

Based on the best-selling sci-fi book series, the Southern Reach Trilogy, by Jeff VanderMeer, "Annihilation" also stars Oscar-nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), and Tuva Novotny (Borg McEnroe) with "Star Wars" actor Oscar Isaac playing Portman's military soldier husband who is the only person to come out of the "Shimmer" alive, but is now dying from a strange disease.

Directed and adapted for the screen by acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina), "Annihilation" is hitting U.S. theaters on February 23rd (with an international release to follow 17 days later, oddly enough, through Netflix).
