Joaquin Phoenix delves into the darkest corners of the city (as well as the darkest corners of his mind) to rescue a young kidnapped girl from an underground prostitution ring in the new international trailer for "You Were Never Really Here."

In a performance that won him a Best Actor award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, Phoenix stars as Joe, an ex-FBI agent and former marine who has been psychologically scarred by past experiences and childhood trauma. Now working as a professional vigilante, Joe is hired to retrieve the missing teenage daughter (Ekaterina Samsonov) of a local senator who is believed to have been abducted by sex-traffickers. While prowling through the city's shadiest streets, Joe finds himself being drawn down a path from which there is no going back.

Based on a book by novelist and TV creator Jonathan Ames ( Bored to Death, Blunt Talk), the crime thriller is written and directed by acclaimed Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, perhaps best known for the 2011 mother-son thriller "We Need to Talk About Kevin."

"You Were Never Really Here" earned rave reviews last year on the festival circuit, and has since been acquired by Amazon Studios for U.S. distribution. The film, which is set to open in the U.K. on March 9th, will be released in U.S. theaters on April 6th.
