For someone who has been dead for 250 years, "Suicide Squad" star Joel Kinnaman doesn't look all that bad in the new official trailer for "Altered Carbon," Netflix's ambitious new sci-fi action series which is based on Richard K. Morgan's best-selling cyberpunk thriller novel.

In what can be broadly described as a cross between "The Matrix" and "Blade Runner," the Netflix series is set in a future world where death is merely an inconvenience rather than a permanent state of being. People -- with enough money, that is -- can now download their digitized consciences into new human bodies, essentially living forever.

Kinnaman plays Takeshi Kovacs, an elite rebel soldier who 250 years ago was brought down while leading a failed revolution against emerging technology (Actor Will Yun Lee also plays Takeshi in flashback scenes).

After being locked up in suspended animation for more than two centuries, Takeshi is suddenly resurrected into a new body (Kinnaman) by the world's wealthiest man Laurens Bancroft (played by The Following's James Purefoy). Takeshi has basically been recruited to solve a murder -- Bancroft's murder.

Written and executive produced by screenwriter-producer Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island, Alita: Battle Angel) and directed by "Game of Thrones" helmer Miguel Sapochnik (who did the "Battle of the Bastards" episode), the series also co-stars Dichen Lachman (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Tamara Taylor (Bones), Ato Essandoh (Vinyl), Hiro Kanagawa (The Man in the High Castle), Adam Busch (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Kristin Lehman (The Killing), Renee Elise Goldsberry (The Good Wife), Martha Higareda (Royal Pains), and Hayley Law (Riverdale).

"Altered Carbon" is premiering Friday, February 2nd only on Netflix.

synopsis:
Based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, Altered Carbon is an intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal, set more than 300 years in the future. Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned -- on ice -- for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself.
