Not since the movie "Arthur" has an Englishman drink so heavily on screen and yet also be so sympathetic.

Watch Benedict Cumberbatch as he taps into his inner Dudley Moore, playing a self-described "narcissistic, schizoid, suicidal alcoholic," in the first trailer for "Patrick Melrose." It's a five-part British mini-series that's been adapted from English writer Edward St Aubyn's best-selling book series, which is semi-based on the author's own life -- who was raised in a severely dysfunctional upper-class household that was marred by alcoholism and physical and mental abuse.

Hugo Weaving and Jennifer Jason Leigh co-star as Cumberbatch's parents, a sadistically abusive English father, and an alcoholic American mother.

German director Edward Berger, who helmed the acclaimed Berlin Wall-era spy series "Deutschland 83," is directing all five episodes from an adapted script by English novelist/screenwriter David Nicholls (Starter for 10, One Day, Far from the Madding Crowd).

"Patrick Melrose," which will also feature appearances by Anna Madeley, Allison Williams, Blythe Danner, Holliday Grainger, Indira Varma, Pip Torrens, Jessica Raine, Prasanna Puwanarajah, and Celia Imrie, is a co-production of Sky Atlantic and Showtime, and will be released globally later in the year.

synopsis:
Based on the acclaimed Patrick Melrose series of novels written by Edward St. Aubyn and adapted by BAFTA award nominee David Nicholls (Far From the Madding Crowd, One Day), Melrose gleefully skewers the British upper class as it tracks the titular characters harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood, through adult substance abuse and ultimately, towards recovery and redemption.

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Sherlock) plays Patrick Melrose, an aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy, who struggles to overcome the damage inflicted by an abusive father and a mother who tacitly condoned the behavior. A true television saga, Melrose is both gripping and humorous, with a dramatic sweep that encompasses the South of France in the 1960s, debauched 1980s New York and sober Britain in the early 2000s. Melrose will devote an hour to each of the five novels, with each episode storytelling a few complicated and intense days in Patrick's life.
