Natalie Portman plays a military-trained biologist who seems to be leading a doomed expedition in the new official trailer for the sci-fi thriller "Annihilation," which also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Thor: Ragnarok's Tessa Thompson, Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez, and Tuva Novotny with Oscar Isaac and Doctor Strange's Benedict Wong.

The film, written and directed by acclaimed "Ex Machina" filmmaker Alex Garland (who is also the writer of "28 Days Later"), is based on the first novel of an award-winning trilogy by science-fiction author Jeff VanderMeer.

Portman stars as a biologist who discovers her husband, a military soldier (played by Isaac), is the only person to ever come out of a secret, quarantined island region that the government has named "Area X." The area is enclosed by a strange alien-like force field and the environment inside has proven to be harmful to humans.

Isaac's character is dying from a mysterious disease. Portman takes it upon herself to lead a research expedition into Area X in the hopes of finding a cure. Unfortunately, she finds something else instead -- newly mutated creatures with sharp teeth!

"Annihilation" is scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 23, 2018.
