HBO has released the first trailer for "David Bowie: The Last Five Years," a new documentary that takes an in-depth look at the rock legend's final years before passing away in January 2016 from liver cancer.

Though he died at the age of 69, Bowie had remained busy up to the very end. The film will chronicle the evolution of his music career, focusing on his final two studio albums, 2013's The Next Day and 2016's Blackstar, a critically acclaimed record that was released on Bowie's 69th birthday, which was just two days before his death. The doc will also look into the making of the rock musical "Lazarus," for which Bowie had composed the music and lyrics while suffering from cancer.

Featuring archival footage and interviews with bandmates and friends, the HBO documentary, which is directed by Francis Whately (David Bowie: Five Years), will be premiering on Monday, January 8th.
