If you love head-scratching spy thrillers and also love Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons -- then you might want to think about purchasing a subscription for STARZ in January.

The cable network is launching a new sci-fi-tinged espionage series called "Counterpart," and from the looks of a new promo trailer, it's going to be plenty of twisting plotlines -- not to mention, plenty of J.K. Simmons.

Set in a world where, 30 years ago, reality had suddenly duplicated itself into a parallel dimension, the thriller follows Howard Silk (Simmons), an ordinary bureaucratic servant who discovers the government has been secretly spying on this alternate universe -- and vice versa. But when Howard's identical counterpart (also played by Simmons) sets up a meeting and informs him that his wife (Olivia Williams) is in danger of becoming a victim of a crazed dimension-hopping assassin, the two Howards agree to switch places. But to catch the killer, Howard must trust his counterpart, who is someone he barely knows, yet knows all too well.

Created by screenwriter Justin Marks (2016's The Jungle Book) and executive produced by filmmaker Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game, Passengers), who also directs the pilot episode, "Counterpart" is premiering Sunday, January 21st on STARZ.

synopsis:
An espionage, sci-fi thriller with a metaphysical twist, Counterpart tells the story of Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons), a lowly cog in a bureaucratic UN agency who is turning the last corner of a life filled with regret, when he discovers the agency he works for is guarding a secret: a crossing to a parallel dimension. Through Howard and his “counterpart” on the other side, Prime, the show will navigate themes of identity, idealism, what ifs, and lost love.
