STARZ has released a sneak-peek featurette for "Counterpart," a new science-fiction-tinged espionage thriller series starring Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons ... and Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons!

Set in a world where the government has been safeguarding an interdimensional gateway to a parallel Earth, the 10-part series follows Howard Silk (Simmons), a bottom-rung bureaucratic agent who gets the rare opportunity to sit down and meet his identical "counterpart" (also played by Simmons). He's a person from another dimension who has almost the same background and history, though there are certain conditions and qualities that are quite different between the two Howards.

While the two worlds have been secretly spying on each other for many, many years (think, the Berlin Wall but on an epic dimensional scale), the two identical Howards are forced to switch places and pretend to be each other when an elusive dimension-crossing assassin (played by Italian actress Sara Serraiocco) threatens to kill their loved ones, specifically Howard's wife, Emily (played by Rushmore's Olivia Williams).

Created by screenwriter Justin Marks (The Jungle Book) and executive produced by acclaimed Norwegian filmmaker Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game, Passengers), who is also directing the first two episodes, "Counterpart" will start airing on Sunday, January 21st on the STARZ network.

synopsis:
An espionage, sci-fi thriller with a metaphysical twist, Counterpart tells the story of Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons), a lowly cog in a bureaucratic UN agency who is turning the last corner of a life filled with regret, when he discovers the agency he works for is guarding a secret: a crossing to a parallel dimension. Through Howard and his “counterpart” on the other side, Prime, the show will navigate themes of identity, idealism, what ifs, and lost love.
