From Garth Davis, the director of the Oscar-nominated drama "Lion," comes a new biblical epic starring two-time Oscar nominee Rooney Mara as Mary Magdalene, three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus of Nazareth, and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter the Apostle.

Told from the perspective of Mary and detailing her unique relationship with Jesus, "Mary Magdalene" is offering a dramatic take on the events leading up to the crucifixion.

In addition to Mara, Phoenix, and Ejiofor, the cast also includes Tahar Rahim (A Prophet), Ryan Corr (Hacksaw Ridge), Ariane Labed (The Lobster), Uri Gavriel (The Band's Visit), and Lubna Azabal (Incendies).

From the producers of "The King's Speech," the film was written by Helen Edmundson (TV's The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher) and Philippa Goslett (How to Talk to Girls at Parties).

"Mary Magdalene" will open in the U.K. on March 16th with a U.S. release to follow, probably around Easter. Watch the newly-released trailer, above.

MARY MAGDALENE is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.
