"The most important mission in the free world" has just been handed to Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok) as he portrays one of the very first U.S. soldiers sent to fight the Taliban after 9/11 in the new trailer for the upcoming fact-based military thriller "12 Strong."

Also starring Michael Shannon, Michael Pena, Geoff Stults, Trevante Rhodes, William Fichtner, and Rob Riggle, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced action movie is based on Doug Stanton's best-selling non-fiction book "Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan," which detailed the real-life story of an elite Special Forces team of 12 brave soldiers who were the first to be deployed to Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks. They were nicknamed the "Horse Soldiers" because the only way the team could travel across the rugged Afghanistan terrain was on horseback.

Danish photojournalist-turned-filmmaker Nicolai Fuglsig directs from a script written by Ted Tally (The Silence of the Lambs) and Peter Craig (The Town, Blood Father).

Slated to hit theaters on January 19th, "12 Strong" co-stars Navid Negahban, Austin Stowell, and Said Taghmaoui while Hemsworth's on-screen wife is being played by his real-life wife, Spanish actress Elsa Pataky (from the "Fast & Furious" movies).

synopsis:
Set in the harrowing days following 9/11, a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the Americans -- accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare -- must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghani horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds: outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does not take prisoners.
