Showtime's The Chi — Official Trailer

From Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe (Master of None) and executive produced by Oscar-winning rapper Common, "The Chi" is a new Showtime original series that takes viewers inside the inner-city world of Chicago's south side.

Loosely based on Waithe's own experiences growing up in a working-class Chicago neighborhood, the ten-episode drama follows the lives of several African-American characters as their communities are forced to deal with the continuing rise of street violence.

Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton, Mudbound) leads a strong ensemble cast that also includes Tiffany Boone (FOX's The Following), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Queen of Katwe), Yolonda Ross (Netflix's The Get Down), Jacob Latimore (Sleight), Alex Hibbert (Moonlight), Armando Riesco (Che) and Jahking Guillory (Kicks).

Filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa, who wrote and directed the Sundance-winning comedy "Dope," directs the pilot episode, which is set to premiere on Sunday, January 7, 2018. Watch the new official trailer, above.

On Chicago's south side, an average day finds kids prepping for school as their parents head off to work, young adults trying to make a living, and the elders keeping an eye on things from their front porches. But in this tough neighborhood, real dangers threaten daily to squelch dreams, and the simplest decisions can have life or death consequences. The Chi is a powerful coming-of-age drama series about an interconnected group of working-class African-Americans who remind us that no matter what, the human spirit is strong and hope never dies.
