Oscar-winner Colin Firth faces rough waters while sailing across the globe in the newly released trailer for "The Mercy," the true-life drama that also stars Oscar-winner Rachel Weisz.

Directed by Oscar-winning documentarian-turned-acclaimed film director James Marsh (Man on Wire, The Theory of Everything), the upcoming movie is based on the unbelievable true story of British businessman and amateur weekend sailor Donald Crowhurst (Firth), who, despite his inexperience, built a boat and entered himself in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race -- an extremely difficult and grueling sailing competition where sailors single-handedly operate their racing yachts in a non-stop marathon around the world.

Weisz portrays Crowhurst's wife Clare, who had strong (and valid) concerns about her husband's pipe dream, though ultimately supported his decision.

Co-starring David Thewlis (Wonder Woman, FX's Fargo) and Ken Stott (The Hobbit Films), "The Mercy" will open in the U.K. on February 9, 2018. A U.S. release date is yet to be announced.

synopsis:
Following his Academy Award-nominated film "The Theory of Everything", James Marsh directs the incredible true story of Donald Crowhurst (Colin Firth), an amateur sailor who competed in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in the hope of becoming the first person in history to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe without stopping. With an unfinished boat and his business and house on the line, Donald leaves his wife, Clare (Rachel Weisz) and their children behind, hesitantly embarking on an adventure on his boat the Teignmouth Electron.
