Considering the fact that actor Doug Jones portrays a captured fish man, Guillermo del Toro's much-talked-about Cold War-era fantasy film "The Shape of Water" may easily be labeled as a typical "creature feature." However, the real monster in this movie appears to be played by a menacing (and fingerless) Michael Shannon.

Check out the final red band trailer for Del Toro's new genre-bending thriller that seems to be composed of equal parts mystery, fantasy, musical, romance, and horror.

Oscar-nominated English actress Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) stars as Elisa, a mute maintenance worker who is employed at a top-secret U.S. government facility. When Elisa is assigned to clean up a restricted laboratory, she discovers the government is holding a strange aquatic creature (Jones) in captivity. But when Elisa develops a trusting relationship with the incarcerated fish man, she's morally compelled to come up with a risky escape plan, enlisting the help of her dearest work friend (Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer) and her sympathetic neighbor (Richard Jenkins).

Meanwhile, Col. Richard Strickland (Shannon) has been placed in charge of the facility's security, overseeing the safeguard of "The Asset" (Jones). Fearing the Russians might want to steal the amphibious creature for themselves, Strickland takes all the necessary precautions. But when he discovers the "Asset" has escaped, possibly due to an inside job, Strickland takes extreme (and violent) measures to retrieve the government's prized possession.

Co-starring Michael Stuhlbarg, David Hewlett, Martin Roach, and Lauren Lee Smith, "The Shape of Water" earned rave reviews at this year's Venice Film Festival, where it ended up winning the Golden Lion Award for Best Film.

Co-written by Del Toro and Vanessa Taylor (Divergent, Game of Thrones), the Fox Searchlight movie is slated for a December 8th theatrical release, during the heart of the awards season.
