Is "Magic Mike" star Alex Pettyfer a figment of a young boy's warped imagination? Sure, it's a weird question, but it gets raised in the new trailer for the psychological mystery thriller "The Strange Ones."

Directed by first-time feature directors Lauren Wolkstein and Christopher Radcliff and based on their award-winning 2011 short, the film stars James Freedson-Jackson, the young actor from 2015's Kevin Bacon-starring thriller "Cop Car," as Sam, a young runaway who is traveling across the country with his older, creepier brother (Pettyfer).

Possibly running from the law (though that's just an assumption), Sam appears to be confused about the events that have transpired. He also appears to be unsure about his own reality, constantly asking himself, what is real and what's just in his head? Could this all be a sick dream, brought on by severe childhood trauma? Hmm, your guess is as good as any.

Winner of a Special Jury Award for Freedson-Jackson's "breakthrough" performance at this year's SXSW Film Festival, "The Strange Ones" will be available exclusively on DirecTV on December 7th before opening in select theaters on January 5th.

synopsis:
Mysterious events surround two travelers (James Freedson-Jackson and Alex Pettyfer) as they make their way across a remote American landscape. On the surface all seems normal, but what appears to be a simple vacation soon gives way to a dark and complex web of secrets.
