"Suicide Squad" star Margot Robbie goes from playing bat-swinging villain Harley Quinn to portraying '90s ice-skating hellion Tonya Harding in the upcoming true-crime dramedy, for which a new red band trailer has just been released.

"I, Tonya" chronicles the disgraced figure skater's career and life and her strained relationship with her abusive mother (played by Allison Janney, in a performance that already has some talking Oscar). The film is also about Tonya's involvement with the 1994 ice-skating competition scandal, in which Tonya's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan) conspired with Tonya's bone-headed bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt (Paul Walter Hauser) in an ill-conceived plot to injure Tonya's team rival, 25-year-old Olympic hopeful Nancy Kerrigan.

When news came out that an unknown assailant bashed Kerrigan in the knee with a police baton, it immediately became a media sensation around the world. But when it also trickled out that Harding was somehow involved with the attack, well, it became one of the most bizarre scandals to ever occur in the world of Olympic sports.

After premiering to glowing reviews at this year's Toronto International Film Festival with many critics singling out both Robbie and Janney's performances (possible award nominations in the near future), "I, Tonya" is directed by Craig Gillespie (Million Dollar Arm, Lars and the Real Girl) and written by Steven Rogers (Hope Floats).

The film will receive a limited theatrical release on December 8th with a nationwide rollout planned for January.

synopsis:
Based on the unbelievable but true events, I, TONYA is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan.

Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, LaVona Golden, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie's I, TONYA is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked -- and checkered -- glory.
