"Thor" star Chris Hemsworth trades in his hammer for army fatigues as he plays an elite Special Forces soldier fighting the Taliban in the trailer for "12 Strong."

Based on the true story of the first Special Forces team deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11, the upcoming military thriller also stars Michael Shannon and Michael Pena and is executive produced by action maestro Jerry Bruckheimer (Black Hawk Down, Pirates of the Caribbean).

Danish photojournalist-turned-filmmaker Nicolai Fuglsig directs from a script by Ted Tally (The Silence of the Lambs) and Peter Craig (The Town, Blood Father).

Adapted by Doug Stanton's non-fiction book "Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan," the film co-stars Geoff Stults, Trevante Rhodes, Austin Stowell, Said Taghmaoui, William Fichtner, and Rob Riggle with Hemsworth's real-life wife, Spanish actress Elsa Pataky (from the "Fast & Furious" movies) playing his on-screen wife.

"12 Strong" arrives in theaters January 19, 2018.

synopsis:
Set in the harrowing days following 9/11, a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the Americans -- accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare -- must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghani horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds: outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does not take prisoners.
