Showtime has released the first trailer for "The Chi," a new inner-city, coming-of-age drama series created by recent Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe (of "Master of None") and executive produced by Oscar-winning rapper Common.

Set on the south side of Chicago, the series follows the lives of several African-American characters as they must deal with the troubling rise of violence that's currently plaguing the city.

Boasting a strong ensemble cast led by Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Tiffany Boone (FOX's The Following), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Queen of Katwe), Yolonda Ross (Netflix's The Get Down), Jacob Latimore (Sleight), Alex Hibbert (Moonlight), Armando Riesco (Che) and Jahking Guillory (Kicks), the Showtime series is loosely based on Waithe's own experiences growing up in a working-class neighborhood of Chicago.

Filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa (Dope, Confirmation) directs the pilot episode, which is penned by Waithe.

"The Chi: Season 1" is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, January 7, 2018.

synopsis:
On Chicago's south side, an average day finds kids prepping for school as their parents head off to work, young adults trying to make a living, and the elders keeping an eye on things from their front porches. But in this tough neighborhood, real dangers threaten daily to squelch dreams, and the simplest decisions can have life or death consequences. The Chi is a powerful coming-of-age drama series about an interconnected group of working-class African-Americans who remind us that no matter what, the human spirit is strong and hope never dies.
