Jeffrey Dahmer was one of America's most notorious serial killers. But what was he like as a teenager? Was he already crazy? Already weird? Or was he a typical kid?

One of the few people who can actually answer that question is cartoonist John "Derf" Backderf. And that's because, during the late 1970s, Backderf and Dahmer went to the same high school in Ohio -- and believe it or not, they were actually friends.

Based on Backderf's autobiographical comic book, "My Friend Dahmer" is a new tense indie drama that explores the early high school years of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Set in 1978, the year he commits his first murder, the film shows Dahmer as he struggles to fit in with his schoolmates while grappling with the issues of being raised in a dysfunctional home.

Disney pop star Ross Lynch (from the teen sitcom "Austin & Ally") portrays a young Dahmer while Alex Wolff (brother of Nat and star of the upcoming "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle") plays a young Backderf who knew him as a shy, introverted and bullied kid.

Directed and adapted for the screen by writer-director Marc Meyers (How He Fell in Love), the film co-stars Vincent Kartheiser as Dahmer's family doctor and Dallas Roberts and Anne Heche as Dahmer's squabbling parents.

After premiering to strong reviews at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, "My Friend Dahmer" is due in theaters on November 3rd. Watch the new trailer, above.

synopsis:
Jeffrey Dahmer murdered 17 men and boys in the Midwest United States between 1978 and 1991 before being captured and incarcerated. He would become one of America's most infamous serial killers. This is the story before that story.

Jeff Dahmer (Disney Channel's Ross Lynch) is an awkward teenager struggling to make it through high school with a family life in ruins. He collects roadkill, fixates on a neighborhood jogger (Vincent Kartheiser), and copes with his unstable mother (Anne Heche) and well-intentioned father (Dallas Roberts). He begins to act out at school, and his goofball antics win over a group of band-nerds who form The Dahmer Fan Club, headed by Derf Backderf (Alex Wolff). But this camaraderie can't mask his growing depravity. Approaching graduation, Jeff spirals further out of control, inching ever closer to madness.
