Gary Oldman is a distinguished actor known for disappearing into his roles -- but this one has to take the cake!

In what will likely be an award-worthy performance, if not a front-runner for Oscar recognition, Oldman completely vanishes as he morphs into British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the upcoming historical thriller "Darkest Hour," which is set during the early days of World War II.

With the aid of some rather astonishing prosthetic makeup, Oldman portrays a 65-year-old Churchill during his first days of serving as Great Britain's Prime Minister. Known as one of the darkest times in his career, Churchill had to determine the country's future involvement in the war. Facing two possible paths, Churchill had to choose to either establish a peace agreement with Hitler or rally his nation to unite against Nazi Germany.

The English Patient's Kristin Scott Thomas plays Churchill's wife, Clementine. Baby Driver's Lily James also co-stars as Churchill's personal secretary Elizabeth Nel, while Rogue One's Ben Mendelsohn is King George VI. Additionally, the cast also includes Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones) as Churchill's Foreign Secretary.

Out of sheer coincidence, the film has been labeled (perhaps unfairly) as the unofficial companion piece to Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk."

Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement) and written by Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything), "Darkest Hour" is hitting select U.S. theaters November 22nd. Watch the film's second theatrical trailer, above.

synopsis:
A thrilling and inspiring true story begins on the eve of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation.

As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.
