To obtain clues about her dying husband, Natalie Portman ventures into a dangerous and bizarre landscape in the first trailer for "Annihilation," the new sci-fi thriller from Alex Garland, the acclaimed writer-director of "Ex Machina."

Based on the first award-winning science-fiction novel of a trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer, the film casts Portman as a strong-willed biologist who leads a small expedition into a largely unexplored island region that the government has named "Area X." The terrain is enclosed by a strange alien-like force field and the environment inside has proven to be harmful to humans.

Portman's character is desperately searching for clues that may save her husband's life. He (played by Oscar Isaac) had previously volunteered to go into the same quarantined area but came out in a coma and is now dying from a strange type of cancer.

Among those playing members of Portman's expedition party are Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Gina Rodriguez while Benedict Wong appears as the lead government scientist.

"Annihilation" is due to open on February 23, 2018.
