Gerard Butler goes up in space to save the world from natural disasters in the latest trailer for the action epic "Geostorm."

Dean Devlin, the screenwriter-producer of the Roland Emmerich-directed movies "Independence Day" and "Stargate," makes his feature directorial debut with this end-of-the-world/conspiracy thriller, which features a huge ensemble cast that includes Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, Daniel Wu, Alexandra Maria Lara, Eugenio Derbez, Mare Winningham, Zazie Beetz, Talitha Bateman, and Andy Garcia as the President of the United States.

Co-written by Devlin and his TV producing partner Paul Guyot (Leverage and The Librarians), the film is set in a modern-day world where scientists have invented climate-controlling satellites designed to prevent weather patterns from turning into catastrophic storms. When a mysterious terrorist secretly takes control of those satellites and uses it to create a literal man-made natural disaster, the world becomes utterly vulnerable to the ultimate doomsday event -- "a Geostorm."

Butler plays a meteorological engineer who volunteers to fly to space to see if he can regain control of the satellites from the international space station. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Butler's brother (Sturgess) and his brother's girlfriend, a Secret Service agent (Cornish) try to help by kidnapping the one person who can authorize a total shutdown -- the U.S. President (Garcia).

"Geostorm" opens October 20th.

synopsis:
After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong -- the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything ... and everyone along with it.

Gerard Butler stars as Jake, a scientist who, along with his brother, Max (played by Jim Sturgess) is tasked with solving the satellite program's malfunction. Abbie Cornish stars as Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson; Alexandra Maria Lara as Ute Fassbinder, the ISS astronaut who runs the space station; Daniel Wu as Cheng, the Hong Kong-based supervisor for the Dutch Boy Program; with Andy Garcia as U.S. President Andrew Palma; and Ed Harris as Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom.
