Check out the new U.S. trailer for "The Secret Scripture," a romantic mystery drama from acclaimed Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father, In America) and starring Rooney Mara (Carol, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

Based on Sebastian Barry's best-selling novel of the same name, the flashback-driven film is set against the backdrop of Ireland's 1922 civil war, revolving around a doomed love affair between a small-town Irish girl, named Roseanne McNulty (Mara), and a downed air force pilot fighting for the Brits (played by Sing Street's Jack Reynor).

The story is recounted by an elderly Rose (played by Vanessa Redgrave), who in the present day is a dying patient staying at a mental hospital. She details her personal story with the help of a secret diary that she has held for many, many years.

Eric Bana, Theo James, and Aidan Turner co-star.

"The Secret Scripture" is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters October 13th.

A psychiatrist (Eric Bana) examines Roseanne McNulty (Vanessa Redgrave), an elderly Irishwoman living in a mental institution, and learns more about her past in the process. Rooney Mara plays McNulty as a young woman, in flashbacks that detail her love triangle with a fighter pilot (Jack Reynor) and a priest (Theo James).
