James Franco has both directed and starred in several feature films before. But this is the first time he's directed a movie as someone else in full character. Taking a page out of the Daniel Day-Lewis playbook, Franco has completely transformed himself into one of the most eccentric filmmakers of our time. And the results are uncanny, if not downright spooky.
Watch Franco as cult film legend Tommy Wiseau in the new official trailer for "The Disaster Artist," which chronicles the making of Wiseau's 2003 indie film "The Room," considered by many as the worst movie ever made since the days of Ed Wood.
The dramedy, in which Franco stars, directs, and produces, is based on the best-selling tell-all book by writer Tom Bissell and "The Room" co-star Greg Sestero (portrayed in the movie by Dave Franco), who detailed his friendship with Wiseau as they came to Hollywood to break into the film industry as actors, but ultimately made what would become a cult film phenomenon that's been labeled as "the Citizen Kane of bad movies."
The cast features a stellar lineup of supporting players, including Seth Rogen, Paul Scheer, Alison Brie, Charlyne Yi, Kelly Oxford, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, June Diane Raphael, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jason Mantzoukas, Nathan Fielder, Jacki Weaver and Sharon Stone. And with appearances by Bryan Cranston, Zach Braff, Kristen Bell, Adam Scott, and Judd Apatow.
An early work-in-progress screening of "The Disaster Artist" premiered to rave reviews back in March at SXSW and has since generated some Oscar buzz. The film is now slated for a theatrical release on December 1st.
