Joaquin Phoenix is a tortured soul who gets paid to rescue kidnapped children in the very first international trailer for the hard-boiled vigilante thriller "You Were Never Really Here," which comes from acclaimed filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, of "We Need to Talk About Kevin" fame.

Phoenix, who hasn't appeared on screen since Woody Allen's 2015 dramedy "Irrational Man," returns with gusto, playing an ex-Marine and ex-FBI agent named Joe, who ekes out a living as a professional vigilante. When the teenage daughter of a New York senator is kidnapped and put into a child-sex ring, Joe is hired to rescue her. But little does he know that rescuing her is only half his mission.

The gritty thriller, which premiered to solid reviews at this year's Cannes Film Festival, is based on the novel by celebrated writer Jonathan Ames, who is also known as the creator and producer of the cult TV comedies "Bored to Death" and "Blunt Talk."

Co-starring Alessandro Nivola, John Doman, Alex Manette, and Ekaterina Samsonov, "You Were Never Really Here" was acquired by Amazon Studios for U.S. distribution. As of yet, the film doesn't have an official U.S. release date.
