The Florida Project — Trailer

Willem Dafoe becomes a reluctant father figure to a mischievous six-year-old girl in the trailer for "The Florida Project," a new slice-of-life drama from acclaimed writer-director Sean Baker, best known for his award-winning iPhone-shot film "Tangerine."

Taking place on the outskirts of Florida just outside Walt Disney World Orlando, the film (which was shot in 35mm) shows the trashier, poverty-stricken side of the Sunshine State, yet is told through the innocent lens of an adventurous child (played by newcomer Brooklynn Kimberly Prince) whose mother is perhaps not the best role model a young girl could have.

Dafoe, whose performance is generating some early buzz (an Oscar nomination could be in the future), plays Bobby, the tough-but-compassionate manager of a budget motel whose latest guests are a struggling, homeless single mother (Bria Vinaite) and her two young kids (Prince and Valeria Cotto). Though he is reluctant at first, Bobby can't help but get involved in the children's lives, becoming their surrogate guardian and babysitter while their mother's off looking for work and money.

After premiering to solid reviews at this year's Cannes Film Festival, "The Florida Project" is now scheduled to hit theaters on October 6th.

Warm, winning, and gloriously alive, Sean Baker's The Florida Project is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood.

Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, The Florida Project follows six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince in a stunning breakout turn) and her rebellious mother Halley (Bria Vinaite, another major discovery) over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at "The Magic Castle," a budget motel managed by Bobby (a career-best Willem Dafoe), whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion.

Despite her harsh surroundings, the precocious and ebullient Moonee has no trouble making each day a celebration of life, her endless afternoons overflowing with mischief and grand adventure as she and her ragtag playmates--including Jancey, a new arrival to the area who quickly becomes Moonee’s best friend--fearlessly explore the utterly unique world into which they've been thrown. Unbeknownst to Moonee, however, her delicate fantasy is supported by the toil and sacrifice of Halley, who is forced to explore increasingly dangerous possibilities in order to provide for her daughter.
