Netflix has released the first trailer for the eagerly-awaited Season 2 of the critically acclaimed series "The Crown," which is created by British screenwriter and playwright Peter Morgan, of "The Queen" and "Frost/Nixon" fame.

Currently nominated for 13 Emmy Awards, including Best Drama, Best Lead Actress (Claire Foy) and Supporting Actor (John Lithgow), the first season of the series chronicled the inaugural years of Queen Elizabeth II's (Foy) reign, exploring her marriage with Prince Philip (Matt Smith) and her relationship with an aging British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Lithgow).

Season 2 has jumped a decade forward, tracing the years 1956 through 1964 during which the Queen faces two major crises: the illegal use of Her Majesty's Armed Forces in Egypt and the scandalous downfall of British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan (portrayed by "Game of Thrones" actor Anton Lesser).

"Dexter" star Michael C. Hall joins the cast of Season 2 as U.S. President John F. Kennedy, while Jodi Balfour (from the Cinemax crime series "Quarry") also joins as First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Meanwhile, other new additions include Matthew Goode (Watchmen, The Imitation Game) as Lord Snowden, husband of Elizabeth's younger sister, Princess Margaret (played by recurring co-star Vanessa Kirby).

"The Crown: Season 2" is due to premiere Friday, December 8th.
