This year marks the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's classic blockbuster "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and Columbia Pictures is planning to bring the film back to theaters for a special re-release in September.
Starring Richard Dreyfuss as an ordinary man who becomes an ardent U.F.O. believer after experiencing a strange, unexplained encounter with a flying saucer, the 1977 science-fiction film is one of the rare Spielberg movies for which he had also written the screenplay.
It became one of Spielberg's highest grossing films of all-time (second to Jaws) but was later surpassed by his subsequent films (Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, etc.).
The movie was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Director, Best Visual Effects, and Best Cinematography (for which legendary cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond won the category), but is perhaps famously remembered for John Williams' iconic and nominated film score, particularly his five-note sequence: Da-da-daaa da-DA!
Digitally remastered in 4K, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" will return to theaters nationwide on September 1st before coming to Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD on September 19th. Watch the newly released re-release trailer, above.
