It's the first original Star Trek series in nearly 12 years, and the first told entirely from the point of view of the ship's first officer, rather than the captain.
Check out the brand-new Comic-Con trailer for "Star Trek: Discovery," which casts former "Walking Dead" star Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham, who was the first human student to ever attend the Vulcan Science Academy under the supervision of Vulcan astrophysicist, Sarek (played here by Gotham's James Frain), who is perhaps better known as Spock's father.
Set roughly ten years before the original "Star Trek" series, "Discovery" follows Burnham's star-trekking journey, beginning with her first days as the newly-appointed First officer of the USS Shenzhou, helmed by Captain Philippa Georgiou (who is played by Chinese superstar Michelle Yeoh).
The cast also includes "Hellboy" actor Doug Jones as Science Officer Saru. Meanwhile, we also get to see another Starfleet ship, called (interestingly enough) "Discovery," which is spearheaded by Captain Gabriel Lorca (played by "Harry Potter" actor Jason Isaacs).
Rainn Wilson, of "The Office" fame, also appears in the new series as con-man Harry Mudd, a character who actually appeared in a couple of episodes of the original Star Trek series.
"Star Trek: Discovery" was created by Alex Kurtzman (The Mummy, Star Trek Reboot) and Bryan Fuller (American Gods, Hannibal), but is currently being supervised by showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts.
CBS will premiere the show exclusively on CBS All Access (it's their subscription-based on-demand service) beginning Sunday, September 24th. Meanwhile, a special two-hour premiere will air on CBS also on September 24th.
